FORMULA V RACECAR

Formula V is a longstanding SCCA class of "spec" racers that provides a lot of close racing for a "reasonable" cost. The cars are based on the Volkswagen aircooled engine, transmission and suspension components with steel tube chassis and FRP bodies.

After building a car from a "kit", I designed and built my own car and raced it, particpating in events in California, Arizona and Oregon. From drawing board, to frame jig, to body buck and molds, to assembly, it took about a year to produce the car.

  • These are the "bucks" used to make the molds for the body. These were made from a variety of materials as required to obtain the design shape.
  • After finishing and painting, the fiberglass molds were made from these.
  • The body parts are made from FRP in the molds and have the final shape of the body.
  • Here's shot of the clay model I made to check the flow of some of the surfaces.
  • The frame is made from steel tubing. A full spaceframe was designed for strength and stiffness.
  • Low temperature brazing was used for the joints.
  • One of the chassis drawings is taped to the wall.
  • The completed frame is being built up with the powertrain and various components.
  • The nose of the first "kit" car is in the foreground.
  • Here's some of the details of the chassis in the cockpit area.
  • The seat was also a FRP molding I made from another "buck".

  • It's true, my head does come to a point!
